Right after we got there and after we had walked about a half a mile down river it started to pour rain. Needless to say, my phone got wet and subsequently, the screen on the cell phone stopped working. I received the following call the other day at work.

Phone rings (and of course, I can't see who's calling me.)

Jeff: Hello.

Little girl: Oh, I must have the wrong number.

Jeff: Well who were you trying to call.

Little girl: Jamie Nackos.

Jeff: Well, this is her husband, Jeff Nackos.

Little girl: Oh, I have the wrong number.

Jeff: Madison?

Little girl: Hi dad.

I still can't help but laugh. I felt his proficiency as a lyricist was his strongest point and with a few simple words could weave a story so rich it could not be contained in a library of literature. This may be a slight exaggeration, but you get the point. When I advanced into my college years, especially during medical school, I gravitated to the music of North Carolina native Ben Folds. An amazing musician and songwriter, Mr. Folds plays a variety of instruments, but his talent on the piano is what impresses me the most. So my goal is to expose whoever will listen to a musician who has greatly influenced my own style and compositions. Here is a song from the first album he put out as a member of the group "Ben Folds Five." It is by far not the best song he's ever written and not his best performance, but it has a rockin' piano solo. Enjoy.

"Let there be light"

Typing on this blog feels like the first time I moonlighted in a small emergency department in Holdenville, Oklahoma. To say that I didn't feel up to the task was the understatement of the century. Yet I walked through the doors and met the doctor that I would be relieving. He showed me around and then said, "Well, since you're here, do you mind if I take off a couple of minutes early?" My whimpering and big puppy dog eyes could not deter him. He was getting the hell out of there as soon as possible. It was at that precise moment that all hell broke loose. For the rest of the night, the 6 rooms in this rural e.r. were filled with a minimum of 4 people in the waiting room. Chest pain, back pain, drug seekers and many little kids who waited 2-3 hours just to find out they had a virus and there was nothing I could for them. But after twelve hours, 2 pepsis, and a kid who had Testicular Torsion (where the testicle basically strangles itself, it hurts like hell), I walked out the door with my head held high, knowing that, just like anyone who toils for the underserved, I was probably going to get sued for something I did that night. And so goes the blogging world. Thank goodness there are no rectal exams involved in blogging. Well, I'm sure there are, but I don't want to know about them. I'm entering unfamiliar territory here and hope that those things I post won't offend everyone all at once. Until that day, ENJOY!
